Topaz seems to have completely stopped dropping feathers at the moment and the quills on her neck are unfurling.
I went in the run and bent down to take some photos of Topaz. Peaches and Barley immediately jumped on my back so I passed the camera to my husband.
If I become more upright to gently tip them off they counter balance and move up to my shoulders. They now jump on me every time they can as if they are really pleased with this new skill.
Anyway back to Topaz.
The quills are beginning to unfurl.
Their was another development from Topaz today. I went in to the girls just as she came out of the main coup shouting. I checked the nest box and to my surprise there was an egg. It was still warm and bigger and rounder than Sparkles eggs. I think Topaz must have laid it.
Sparkle laid her egg in the little coup a little later so I am fairly sure it was Topaz that laid it. Honey laid the day before yesterday and before that six days earlier so it’s unlikely to be hers. Hurrah for Topaz!
Maybe she will get into her stride now and make up for the shortfall of eggs. It will be interesting to see when her next egg will be laid.
Nearly scrambled eggs foe breakfast! Well done Topaz.
Your two trapeze artists are just lovely .
It would be great to have Topaz laying.
This afternoon when you visit my two youngest will show you their new skill. They love showing it off at the moment.
Are you charging admission yet?
Did you know it is not the fashion to have performing animals ? 🙂
Ha Ha!
Awe, Topaz doesn’t look half bad for a molting chicken. I’ve seen some UGLY molts in my day. Mostly from my hens. And Peaches and Barley are just adorable. I love their cute personalities. My Ginger used to jump up to my shoulder. She’d nip at my hair. I have wild curly hair and I think she disliked that it didn’t lay smooth like her princess perfect feathers.
I think I’m getting close to eggs from the babies. I’ll try to get some updated photos to blog about this weekend. We were on holiday for a while. Went to Glacier National Park. It’s SOOOO hard for me to leave my babies. Even though I have the dearest friend who looks after them. And now she’s having major surgery next week and while she’ll never ask for help, I told her that I’m going to be all over her helping. She’s done so much for me. So life’s just been a bit crazy for me.
I am amazed how quickly Topaz’s pin feathers have unfurled into the cutest little laced feathers and that the girl who doesn’t lay eggs laid an egg while this is going on!
It will be good to see an update on your blog and great if you get eggs soon from the youngsters. I am hopeful my youngsters may start laying soon.
I know what you mean about leaving them, I found it hard enough for just one night but they were of course fine.
It’s good to have a friend that can look after your girls and I know you will be a great help to her while she recouperates.
Topaz is well into her moult, and does not look too bad. We’ve been away for a week and I can’t believe how wretched two of my wyandottes look on my return; with lots of feathers missing, they look really tiny. You’ll not find leghorns anywhere any tamer than your two beauties.
That is so great to hear because they are so all over me and yet I know if I were to reach out to them they are off like a shot but the next minute all around me again. They love to get close to me and to be all over me, more so than any of my other girls, yet it’s just on their terms and they don’t want me to touch them. I don’t mind though because it makes them coming to me and jumping on me special because I know it’s just something they want to do, who knows why! I think it’s their way of showing affection but on their terms and that’s okay by me.
