Emerald has a lovely character. She is people friendly and isn’t bothered by us getting close to her. She is the only one of the girls that I can pick up easily. She is inquisitive and will follow me around and always wants to see what I am doing.
Toffee by comparison is the most people shy. She doesn’t like us to get close to her and is the most difficult of the girls to pick up.
All the girls know where the treats are and come running when I open the cabinet door. Emerald though takes it a bit further.
As soon as I open the store cabinet door Emerald jumps to the coop roof
She then jumps to the top of the cabinet
She then stretches her neck to the sunflower seed box
She reminds me of Pepper and Dotty when they used to do this. None of the other little girls do this and I know if she could get that lid off she would help herself.
One day as I took the lid off the box she jumped onto my wrist and started helping herself to the seeds from the box. She is so cheeky and I had to shoo her down.

Me too! My husband calls her “all neck and no tail” and “black crow”. I just think she is beautiful and it is endearing that she is also so friendly.

Just to say first of all that I have been following your blog for a number of weeks and think that you do an excellent job: it is indeed fascinating to read your descriptions and accounts of your lovely flock. I, too, am purely bantams and I can well identify with the different types of relationship your birds form with you – and with each other. I think that Emerald is a beautiful bird and her inquisitiveness is wonderful; one of my birds is a chocolate Pekin name Galaxy and she attempts to jump onto my hand if I am bearing treats – she simply can’t wait to discover what is in the bowl. Like your own, my flock spans the extremes of sitting on your knee to “don’t touch me, or I’ll bolt!” Happy hen-keeping, and thank you for such a regularly-updated and interesting blog.
You are so spot on with the different relationships of the different characters. Today when Emerald did her thing as I opened the sunflower seed tub she jumped into it and started taking them straight from the tub. I had to put the tub down with her on it and lift her out of it then throw some out. She totally cracks me up. She is so funny and such a joy.
Just as you say they all have their own level of how close you are allowed to get them and the ones that trust you and let you in just get right into your heart.
I am so glad to have you along and have your feedback. As you say bantams are really quite special, they don’t bond with us so easily so when they do it is really special.
