This morning when I went into the chickens poor Dotty had no tail at all. When I opened the coop to do my morning clean up there was her last tail feather under the perch that she sleeps on. After hanging on for two weeks the last feather has finally fallen out.
She looks so strange with no tail at all. It reminds me of how she looked when we first had her at two months old and she wasn’t fully feathered, except that she is now a bigger version of that Dotty.
It is so strange seeing Dotty like this. Some how the little girls look okay without tails but Dotty looks very odd. Pepper and Bluebell haven’t lost their tails so Dotty really stands out. I do hope it grows back soon.
Oh she looks so sad ! My old girl Clover has one tail feather left and is looking really old . But hopefully they will be like the Hans Anderson story of the ugly duckling . 🙂

Dotty is only a year and a half so not old, it seems to be different with each of them and depends how gradual or sudden the moult is. I am sure that as awful as she looks now she will be beautiful again soon, it’s just a matter of how long is soon!
This is my first moult so a learning process and I am just a bit shocked to see Dotty in such a state, however looking at other blogs and the Lane, I see others going through the same thing so feel reassured. I just feel for my poor sweet Dotty.
My Barred Rocks look just like that! 🙂 No tails and one has no neck feathers but all these new pin feathers on her neck. My husband tells people that it looks like someone had a pillow fight in our back yard.
I know just what you mean. Some mornings it looks like there was a pillow fight in the coop overnight.
Dotty is the only one of the big girls to lose her tail but when I pick her up (gently) she feels like a hedgehog so I know they are coming back in.
My husband says he thinks her tail is getting longer.
