For the last three days I have thought that Smoke might be going broody and yet for the last three days she has laid an egg.
I would notice that she had been in the nest box for a long time. At first all morning and then as her egg got later it would be all afternoon.
When I checked on Smoke she behaved like a broody. She puffed herself up, raised her tail, made an angry sound and went to peck me when I lifted her from the nest box.
When I lifted her each time there was her egg. Her eggs are distinct as they are larger and rounder than any of the other little girls’ eggs. I sat her on the patio and she sat for a while like a broody girl does. After that though she went to the food dish and then out into the run as usual and didn’t return to the nest box.
It’s as if she is almost broody but not quite. It is most odd. I will update as she goes on.
Oooo it certainly looks as if she is doesn’t it?! My blue serama was the broodiest of the lot! :-0 xx
She does look like a broody but after three days of this she took a day off yesterday and then was in the nest box this morning when I had to leave to do my deliveries. When I got back at lunch time she was out and her egg was in the box. Perhaps she just likes to linger on her egg and gets cross when I lift her off. I will try leaving her alone next time.
On another note, the other day, I said that my girls were so used to me being around them with or without a hood up, that they take no notice of my hood as they know it’s still me. Well my husband never wears a hood but because we went up to the run in heavy snow yesterday he wore a coat with a hood up. The girls were freaked out by him and all scattered to the bottom of the run.
It’s obviously all about what they are used to. Perhaps you need to go into your run with a towel on your head to get them used to it. 🙂 xx
Ha – I might try that! 🙂 xx
🙂 xx
Great photos, she is another very good looking girl.
She is a very pretty girl. Despite her feathers looking a bit ragged I just love that photo with her tail held high. She is also a very impressive layer and the best serama layer so far.
She does indeed look beautiful and is turning broody. When did she first lay? Ginger, who had been laying since November, has been making the clucking sound since yesterday, so I’m expected her to remain on the nest when she lays tomorrow. Butterscotch is broody again – the second time since she completed her moult!
Smoke laid her first egg on 10th December and her last egg on 25th January. After a couple of broody days she didn’t go in the nest box at all today so she seems to have come out of it quickly. Just lifting her from the nest box seems to have been enough to break it.
