As yesterday morning was frosty I decided to give the girls some warm mash. By the time I took it out to them Apricot, Speckles and Emerald were on the perch above the ladder in a spot of sunshine but Freckles, Dandelion and Cinnamon came straight to the mash.
As I got here Speckles had just jumped down. Apricot is fluffed up like a ball.
It was difficult to get a shot of all the girls because Cinnamon and Dandelion were at a lower level. You can see how blue the sky was while the garden was still frosty. Despite the frosty start it was a lovely day.
Lovely picture.
Despite the frost it was such a beautiful day with blue sky and sunshine. What a contrast today. It has been dark, cold and very wet all day. A really miserable day. No perching for the girls today, they hung around near the patio area and in the small shelter which seems favourite at the moment.
Can I ask what is in the mash please? I think my girls might enjoy some warm food when it’s cold!
Thanx

Mash is simply their normal pellets mixed with water. I mix with cold water in summer and hot water in winter although it doesn’t stay warm for long. The main thing is the different texture makes it a treat for them but they are actually having their normal food so you are giving them what they should be having but they take to it as a treat. They love it and it’s healthy for them and it’s nice to give something warm on cold days.
Ah that’s great! I have noticed that they prefer their pellets when I add water. I shall try warm mash tomorrow!
Thank you loads Tx
You are welcome. My husband said that mash is potatoes and butter, very funny!
I did have one very bright girl (bantam brown leghorn) who use to flick the pellets out of the dish on to the patio area and then flick water from the water dish next to pellet dish on to the pellets to make her own mash. How clever is that!
