The tomatoes are ripening at last

We have had the best crop of tomatoes for many years. They are abundant but, due to a lack of sun, have been taking ages to ripen. I have been taking a few indoors and keeping them in a cool, dark, cupboard to ripen. They have ripened at the rate of one a day which is great as we have one between us in our lunchtime sandwich.

Since the monster tree next door has been cut back the veg plot is now getting a lot more light. Suddenly the tomatoes have started to ripen on the plant.

The first plant has ripening tomatoes

We have already eaten quite a few from this plant. The first ones I ripened indoors but the last few we have eaten straight from the plant. They are really good tomatoes.

The second plant is ripening

These have been slower and we haven’t eaten any from this plant yet. That’s not a bad thing though as it stops them all coming at once.

Giant tomatoes

Even the giant tomatoes have finally got going. This was an experiment but I don’t think that I would grow these again. Although the tomatoes are big there are far fewer of them and they take a lot longer to grow.

The forecasters are saying that we may be in for an Indian summer this year. I really hope so because that would give us a good chance of getting the most out of our veg plot. Also I love the sun and would love some late sun in the garden. Here’s hoping!

The tomatoes look lovely. I hope we have some more sun, it feels too soon for summer to end!

    • The tomatoes are the best we have ever had. That second plant with the ripening tomatoes were red today and I have now picked them ready for lunch tomorrow. This is the first year, that so far, we haven’t had split tomatoes or blight. Again it isn’t down to us but down to the weather. The rain has kept them watered and stopped them splitting. Personally I would love more sun but the rain this summer has meant no need to water and it’s better for veg than any amount of watering is. Having said that, I too don’t want summer to end and am really hoping for more sun.

Your tomatoes look very good, we have had a glut of tumbler tomatoes, they are the ones i sell, the last of them are still green, today i am going to pick them, and make green tomato chutney. we still have, Shirley and gardeners delight in the green house, they are still going strong, and one big boy tomato in a pot out side, that have loads of really
big tomatoes on, they are the ones we like fried. I would hate not to have a veg garden i think you get a lot of joy growing your own. I am sure you will do better than ever now you are getting so much more light.

    • Our tomatoes are amazing this year. We have loads still to come and are now eating them every day. We didn’t do any tumbler or cherry tomatoes this year as I really don’t like the flavour as much as the bigger ones. It’s great for you to add to your sales though. You are right that there is something special about growing your own veg and the extra light is going to make a huge difference to the garden, it has already made a difference to the speed that the tomatoes are now ripening.
