Tweaking the veg plot

Our broad bean plants were finished and looked ugly but we didn’t want to remove them and leave the space empty. As soon as there is an empty space the neighbourhood cats use it as a toilet. In fact they often use our garden as a toilet, even when it is planted, but we don’t want to make it easy for them.

On a trip to the garden centre we found a box of mixed salad leaves at a reasonable price. Even if they don’t come to much they could be given to the chickens.

Spent broad bean plants looking rather ugly

I have planted a salad leaf patch

It looks a bit pathetic at the moment but it’s better than an empty space and better than the dead broad beans. I will update when they have grown a bit.

I also like to keep the veg plot full.I am getting a bit fed up with watering. we need some rain. but want it at night.

We used to have cats doing the same in our borders in the back garden, hardly any come in the garden now. I’m not sure if it is because the chickens are bigger and are regularly roaming the garden.
Twice in the last month I have had to deal with horrible stinky cat poop on the front garden. I think it’s because I’ve let the grass get too long though, they don’t do it when the grass is short.

I’m jealous of all the edibles you get from your garden!

    • We have sometimes cleaned up cat poop twice a day. It is horrible and we have tried all the remedies that are out there and nothing has stopped it. It is a constant ongoing slog.

This is probably our best year ever from the veg plot. Sometimes it’s good and sometimes not but it’s always interesting and this year it’s been better than most, probably due to more rain at this time of year. Watering is never as good as rain.
