Every day, several times a day, I check the nest boxes for eggs just in case I have missed the egg shout. I lift both nest box lids and check inside. Every time I do this the four bigger girls check too.
If I am looking in the nest boxes they must look too. They must come and see what I might be looking at. They must not miss anything because they are nosy girls.
The do make me smile. The little girls take no part in this daily procedure. It doesn’t concern them. They don’t know about egg laying stuff…. yet!
Expect they will soon.
I live in hope.
I’m sure it won;t be long. I am amazed that some of mine look to be in peak condition, with really red combs, but aren;t laying yet. That said, Pavlova laid her first today – lovely colour, but smaller – like Barley – than what she was producing last season. I only hope she keeps going! Ah, the vagaries of bantam layers!
I think perhaps they lay smaller eggs at the beginning of the season and then they gradually get larger. Well done Pavlova. I know what you mean about bantam layers but I still wouldn’t swap them.
