Combs are getting redder by the minute

It was only three days ago that I did a post on combs and I said in the comments that Speckles comb would get a bit bigger and redder. Today I realised that in just that short time it has got bigger and redder. Whereas it still had some lighter patches a few days ago it is now completely red.

Even Emerald’s face is now quite pink. The little girls have really red faces and combs and the good news is that we haven’t seen Freckles pecking at Rusty’s head since I last mentioned it. I think her head feathers are looking a bit better.

I took some photos just before bedtime so it is getting a bit dark.

Emerald seemed to hear something in the garden and was straining to see what it was. I couldn’t see anything and have no idea what she was looking at.

By the time I turned round to get another shot of these two they had gone in to bed. I am impressed by how quickly they make their way straight to their own perch these days. No hesitating like they used to do and therefore no getting bothered by the bigger girls.

They have lovely red faces and combs and Rusty’s head feathers look pretty much back to normal. Hurrah! We just need them to start laying some eggs now.

I think that Speckles will the next girl to lay.

Speckles is looking really good – as is Freckles. Eggs should be imminent. Several of mine have stopped again, having started a few weeks ago! As of today, Cotton is no longer broody, after 7 weeks on the nest. SO, in about a week, she’ll begin to produce another clutch of 10 (12, if we’re lucky), then the whole cycle will start over. Happy days!

    • Funny you should say that because Barley has done the same. She laid every other day for four eggs then stopped. None for four days now. Hurrah for Cotton, no longer broody … for now! I have to say that I don’t miss that. Oh well, I am sure there will be eggs soon.

Off topic – I don’t suppose you’d like to buy a vintage tea set? My mum has asked me to sell her great grans.

    • The thing is they don’t go for much money. We now have enough vintage crockery to serve 160, which is loads more than we need and we only buy if it’s a bargain or exceptionally pretty. We really don’t need any more but I can’t resist when it’s a rock bottom price but that isn’t good for you. You could send me details but you would probably get more elsewhere. I have bought loads at charity shops really really cheap which probably isn’t what you want to hear. It is a shame but it just doesn’t make much money.

  3. Jenny, I am thinking that e-bay might be your best bet. Things like that seem to go quite well on e-bay.

Should be getting lots of eggs soon, They say we are in for some nice weather
in the near future,Might start them off..

    • I hope so. I am already enjoying the better weather. There has been a change in the girls too. They are much more vocal and not only has Speckles taken to jumping on me again but Emerald jumped on the gate yesterday. It’s funny how their behaviour changes as we head for spring and egg laying.

Thanks Carol – will try eBay with a reserve I think. It’s not pretty as such but very elegant. I think it’s pre 1910 and it’s a shame to sell it really but I know we’ll just shove it in the loft until we next move house!

    • It is a shame that they don’t make much money unless really rare because there are just so many sets still out there. I have been amazed at how cheaply we have collected our stuff. One day we will probably get rid of our collection for very little too but we just feel that we have made the most of it along the way.
