Speckles has been hanging on to her last tail feather for the past week. This afternoon it fell out and now she has no tail.
She looks such a sweetie with no tail and she is so shy at the moment. This takes me back to last year when she first came to us. I look forward to her growing her tail back and with it her confidence. I am sure that she will return to the changed Speckles that grew in confidence last year once she got her feathers back.
Strange how they lose thier comfidence while they mault, I have learnt so much about chickens since you have been keeping them. But as you say Speckles still looks cute with out her tail feathers.
I never knew until I kept chickens that they lose their confidence when they moult but it is clear with my girls that they do. Speckles is back to how she was last year and Butterscotch is back to full confidence again with her new head feathers.
Speckles does look a little cutie without her tail feathers.
Despite moulting, her old feathers retain a lovely sheen. She looks good, and is moulting at a good time of year, to be fully re-feathered for the winter.
It’s funny because photos never show as well as the real thing but I too thought how her feathers still have the slightly green/ blue sheen to them. Even while moulting I think she still looks lovely.
I think she is lovely . I think they lose their confidence as they are probably not feeling 100% . Not so much the losing of the feathers but the gaining of the new ones.
I hadn’t thought of it like that but you are probably right. The discomfort of the pins coming through could make them feel under par and therefore not showing their usual confidence.
