First snow

I know other countries, such as America, have had a lot of snow. I know that even in the North of England there has been some snow but down here in the South of England we haven’t had any snow until now.

It came as a surprise to look out of the window this morning and see some snow. This is not only the first snow this year but the first snow this winter. Some years we have had lots of snow as early as November and some years we have had a sprinkle of snow as late as May but this morning we awoke to our first snow this winter.

I felt it needed to be photographed.

It wasn’t much and by lunch time it was gone except for a few patches but it was still our first snow of the winter.

My girls were totally confused . They all stood huddled by the run door afraid to move at first. Once they had got their confidence they loved pecking at the snow and drinking it.
The point is their run is covered but clear yo leg the light in and so it was dark in there all morning so at first they didn’t want to leave the coup.

    • Because my girls are confined to their run I don’t have this but they did like pecking at the snow that came off my boots. They also stood at the end of the run and drank from the puddles as the snow was falling into them. It was funny to see them lined up and drinking the snow as it fell.

As winters go, it hasn’t been too bad here in the north; however, my run is still covered in compacted snow and the ground still frozen in places. The salvation has been the Christmas trees – our own and one passed on by a friend; they seem to help thaw the ground and protect it from the extremities of winter. I’m moving them around on a daily basis. My girls are not keen on snow, but seem to hate frozen ground even more. It’s supposed to milder mid-week, so maybe I wont have to bring the drinkers in overnight.

    • We have had a record breaking mild winter down South. My chicken’s waters have only frozen on one morning so far and just had some ice in them on a couple of mornings but not frozen solid. This has been the only snow so far. It is colder than it has been at the moment but as you say it’s forecast to be milder by mid-week.

We bought a cheaper Christmas tree this year and by the time Christmas was over there were hardly any needles left on it and plenty of needles on our floor.

May!?! That is so odd, because I have never seen May snow in the states.

Do the girls like the snow?

    • I thought you were in England so that surprised me but explains your snow earlier than ours. Yes, on occasions we have had snow in May but over all have very little snow. My girls are in a contained run so they don’t get to be in snow, therefore I don’t really know how they would react.

  4. I was thinking about snow in May and thought that I should have explained it more fully. It has snowed in May only a few times in my lifetime and is a bit of a novelty. It is only a sprinkle though and gone again in a few hours at most. We never get the sort of snow that you get and it is rare for it to hang around for long.
