Yesterday Butterscotch laid our first egg this year and today she laid the second.
Butterscotch is as regular as clock work. She lays eggs nearly every day for three weeks then goes broody. She takes a break for two weeks and drops some feathers while on her break. She then starts laying again. She laid the first egg of the new year yesterday on day fourteen since she started her break and she then laid again today.
Butterscotch is quite an amazing girl. It is lovely to be getting eggs again and soon maybe some of the other girls will get started. I can’t wait to have an abundance of eggs again. Butterscotch has done a good job of keeping us in some eggs through the winter months.
Come on girls, it’s time you took a leaf out of Butterscotch’s book and started giving us some more lovely eggs.
Never mind the eggs I love your egg stand! Richard is so thoughtful.
I love it too. It’s also great for when I want to photograph the eggs. It also holds eight eggs so if all eight girls laid in a day it would hold the day’s eggs. Eight eggs in a day would probably be a miracle though!
She is a real treasure; hopefully, she’ll continue this pattern. Eggs have dried up here almost totally, despite several coming back into lay post-moult. 4 days with no eggs, then one today. Am wondering if the atrocious weather an persistent rain might be to blame – or are they just being passengers!
I agree that she is a treasure. None of my other girls have come back into lay yet despite Topaz endlessly having a practice session and actually Peaches and Barley’s combs have started to get quite red. They are not as big as they get but are much redder so are on their way towards getting ready to lay I think. The weather has been so awful though and I think we are all hoping for a dryer spell though not sure how soon that will be. Let it stop raining soon please and we will see what will be. Some dry weather would be good and would lift all of us. We can but hope!
I have an egg story too! We got our first egg of the year from Peach yesterday, but found 2 in the nesting box today. We think that she laid one yesterday, and with the frozen weather one cracked and froze. The other one felt cold to us, so we kept that one in the fridge and discarded the cracked one.
I wouldn’t want to lay eggs in this weather! ?
Well done Peach. It is early in the year to start laying again but everything seems to be a bit early this year.
Yea Butterscotch.
I got one egg last week. I think Pearl is laying. I gave everyone a once over tonight and Pickles and Peaches are still fully in the throws of molting. Go figure. I thought they were done when both had come back into lay. They they stopped and finished up molting. Just when I think I have my hens sorted out, I haven’t a clue.
The moult this year does seem to be very stop – start. Maybe you are right and it is to do with the weather. Who knows! They will get it done eventually. It’s good that we are all starting to get eggs again though.
