I decided to give the girls a treat of some fish to boost their protein a little as Toffee and Emerald are still growing feathers back in after their moult. Emerald looks pretty much back to normal and Toffee’s tail has grown back in but she is still dropping feathers. She is looking good though.
The right hand dish seems most popular to start with. See Toffee’s tail, right hand foreground, back to it’s normal length. Also note that Peaches and Barley are as close together as always.
I love the way they all, in turn, circle around as if another position may be a bit better. The fish only lasted a few minutes. I think we can safely say they enjoyed their treat.
How ironic: I gave mine some fish today, as the moult has begun here, too! Cate, the welsummer, has made an unbelievable recovery and is now laying again! The fish will certainly give her an energy boost.
That is a coincidence. I wonder if Emerald and Toffee will lay again this year. I could do with a few more girls laying. I have only three out of six laying and barely enough eggs to keep us going.
Oh, so nice. I should do that too. My Peaches is fully molting now and looks just awful. Pickles is starting too. Their run is full of feathers. I feel so awful for them. They look so miserable. Poor babies. But it’s just part of life.
At least I have got two done before the others start. It will be interesting to see how it goes with Peaches and Barley as it will be their first moult so an unknown quantity for me. You are right though, it is part of life for them.
If we get a decent September an they’re through the moult, then they might start again for a few weeks: fingers crossed for you. We’ve been down to 3 several days, from a large flock, untiil yesterday, when they excelled themselves with ten.
Ten! That’s amazing. Well done girls! I suppose you just never know. It’s a case of wait and see and as long as everything is good with the girls then the eggs are always an added bonus, a very nice bonus though.
